Finance for Non-Financial Managers
Introduction
Financial statements report the financial performance and position of a business. Having a thorough understanding of the financial implications of business decisions as a manager in your organisation can help the business thrive and maximise shareholder returns. This course will help you to grasp basic accounting concepts and effectively apply your analytical skills to interpreting various information embedded within financial statements to make (or provide advisory for) informed decisions.
Course Objectives
- Apply understanding of basic principles of finance in interpreting financial statements and reports.
- Apply understanding of key ratios to financial analysis and evaluation of organisational performance.
- Leverage on financial information in making informed decisions in their existing and future roles.
In this workshop, participants will learn:
- Understand common accounting jargon.
- Apply financial language.
- Identify with the various financial statements.
- Evaluate organisation’s financial health.
- Conduct breakeven analysis.
About the Trainer
Xiaoqi is a Singapore Chartered Accountant. She graduated from NTU with a Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) with Minor in Chinese, and holds a Master in Education (Merit) from University of Bath. She is effectively bilingual in both English and Chinese. Her working experience includes auditing with Big Fours as well as financial accounting with public listed firms before she embarked on her teaching and corporate training career.
Since 2007, Xiaoqi has been specialising in teaching as well as conducting corporate training for Financial Accounting and Auditing modules. The professional qualification programmes that she teaches include ACCA, Singapore C.A. as well as under/postgraduate degrees. In addition, she is ACTA certified and has delivered WSQ training in Finance for Non-Financial Managers, Preparing Budgets, Consolidation of Financial Statements, Financial Analysis and Negotiation skills.
Xiaoqi is known to be extra patient and dedicated towards her learners who have also affirmed her teaching/training as ‘brilliant, direct, and to the point, making things easy to understand by not beating around the bush’. Her passion in education, coupled with the drive to improve herself has motivated her to start her Doctorate in Education (EdD) programme with the University of Bath, UK in 2016.

The course aims to aid and prepare Non-Native Speakers of the English Language to learn and grasp the fundamentals of the language. At the end of the course, the students will be able to read and write in English as well as be able to comprehend and use English in conversations. The course offers a comprehensive syllabus that aims to prepare learners up to the Intermediate level.
With the help of the recommended texts, the course aims to provide a seamless syllabus progression from Intermediate to Upper Intermediate level. Grammatical structures will be introduced in different contexts with questions that will encourage students to work out the rules for themselves. The vocabulary syllabus will involve the learning of new words in lexical sets; as well as acquiring good habits for picking up vocabulary. Reading and listening activities contextualise and bring together previously introduced language. The syllabus contains practices that are broken down into different units.
The unit-by-unit study will help in focusing on developing students’ written English in different contexts and tones. The interesting choices of texts, together with manageable motivating tasks help students to develop fluency and accuracy in the core areas of language acquisition. Workbooks are offered at each level to cover a range of exercises intended to extend the grammar and vocabulary.
A supplementary workbook is also used, targeted at advancing the student’s level of grammar. The book is designed to help learners master key concepts in English grammar easily and quickly. Students who need to acquire a level of competency in writing will find the exercises useful.
Course Assessment
The student will be assessed through formative and summative assessments. These will include an assessment of reading, writing, listening, and speaking relevant to the level of study.
The types of assessments students will complete during the course may include tests, reports, proposals, giving presentations, leading and participating in group discussions, group projects, listening and note taking, and reading tasks.
Students who have completed this level can move on to the next level, Ceritifcate in English : Upper Intermediate, to improve their English proficiency.

Attendance Requirement
- At least 75% attendance. Do note that no re-runs will be given for learners who do not meet the attendance requirement.

- At least 75% attendance AND assessed as competent in summative assessment/s.
