Doctor of Education
This course aims to provide a learning environment for those aiming to research a specific issue of educational concern in depth. The specific overall aims of the academic course of study are to provide the opportunities and support necessary for students to:
- Reflect on and synthesise learning from theory, research and reflexive practice in a manner commensurate with advanced scholarship.
- Develop and demonstrate the ability to use research to inform and question practice.
- Enhance understanding of research and conduct an individual doctorate level research course related to a specialised area of educational thinking and/or provision.

Module Outlines
Using the Literature to Inform Educational Research
You have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to undertake a literature search and plan an appropriate literature review, and to begin to develop your understanding of relevant contemporary research and possible gaps in knowledge.
Educational Research: Practice and Planning
This module equips you with the knowledge and skills you require to undertake systematic primary research in the field of education as part of your Advanced Independent Study module.
To this end the module explores and questions the uses and applications of research methodologies, data collection methods, data analysis methods and issues of ‘good practice’ including reliability, validity and ethics. There will support available through workshops, project supervision etc. but the module will emphasise your autonomy in determining, in a reflexive manner, appropriate decision making and independent learning.
Philosophy and Stance in Educational Inquiry
This module provides the option of beginning doctoral studies with a focus on the philosophical basis of your approach to both education and knowledge. Situating you as a creator of knowledge from the outset, the focus in this module, which is an alternative to Combining Academic and Professional Practice as a first module, will be on examining and articulating your ontology as both a researcher and an educator, leading to an understanding and articulation of your approach to epistemology. It is a useful starting point on the programme for those students who wish to start their studies with an examination of the philosophical basis of their future educational enquiry.
Research Ethics, Planning and Presenting
This module is the final preparation necessary to commence your doctoral thesis, ensuring you have a rigorous approach to any relevant ethical issues and are able to present a coherent and manageable plan of data collection and analysis. There will be workshops to introduce you to the processes for ethical approval, discuss the requirements for your final research proposal and provide peer and tutor feedback on draft presentations.
Advanced Independent Study
The module provides the opportunity for students to consolidate their learning experiences throughout the programme by undertaking a self-initiated research doctoral level project that significantly contributes to the development of new knowledge within the context of education. Students will complete a project based on a research proposal and search strategy for a literature review developed in previous modules on the programme (subject to the project being agreed by the supervisory team and programme staff taking part in the Thesis Workshop).

Applicants are expected to be engaged as professionals in education.
The course equates to 540 credits, of which up to 60 may be M Level credits. To be accepted onto the course you will normally have achieved these credits through study at master’s level or through an equivalent qualification such as a postgraduate diploma or certificate in an education or research methods-based programme, usually within the last five years and have at least two years professional experience in a relevant field. If you have yet to achieve this amount of Level 7 credits, then you could complete the required amount by studying two modules on our MA Education programme. This means you have advanced standing of 60 M level credits towards the EdD. In some circumstances you may be accepted with other experience or qualifications or involvement in educational research activity.
All applications will be subject to interview, which will normally involve two members of the Course Team and take place at Teesside University, (although this can be arranged to take place via Skype or MS Teams if necessary). The interview will be informal, but applicants will be expected to give considered answers to questions concerning their:
- Past educational and research experience;
- Views on the relationship of research to practice;
- Potential ideas for original research;
- Reflections on their own ontological and epistemological stance;
- The ability to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English.
Applicants will also have the chance to ask staff members any questions they may have about the programme of study and support available, IT requirements etc. The team will reach a decision on the application based on a judgement as to our ability to satisfactorily support the area of study or approach to research the applicant is likely to pursue. A written record of the informal interview will be kept.
English Language Requirement
- Applicants are expected to have IELTS average of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in all components
Mature Candidate
Candidates who are at least 30 years of age with at least 8 years of working experience. To qualify as a mature candidate, you are required to submit a Personal Statement of not more than 200 words and 2 Referee Reports from at least one employer. Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.
