The Diploma in Computing provides students with a comprehensive foundation in computer science, software engineering, and digital technologies. Delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, business games, simulations, and directed independent study, the programme integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application. Core modules include computer systems architecture, programming, software engineering, web design and development, database systems, and computer communications. This structure equips graduates with the technical expertise, problem‑solving ability, and adaptability required to pursue careers in IT services, software development, and digital innovation, or to progress to advanced study in computing disciplines.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the programme will be able to:
- Understand computer systems architecture – Demonstrate knowledge of hardware, software, and peripheral components that form modern computer systems.
- Apply programming and problem‑solving skills – Design algorithms and implement solutions using high‑level programming languages such as Java, with an introduction to object‑oriented approaches.
- Develop software engineering practices – Apply principles of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, system design, and implementation.
- Design and develop websites – Create and maintain web applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and client‑side technologies to contemporary web standards.
- Manage database systems – Apply data modelling techniques to design, modify, and maintain database structures while ensuring integrity and reliability.
- Understand computer communications – Gain foundational knowledge of computer networks, devices, and communication protocols.
- Adapt to emerging technologies – Recognize and respond to developments in computing, including digital transformation, cybersecurity, and cloud‑based solutions.
The programme is delivered via lectures, seminars, workshops, business games and simulations and directed independent study. The latter will normally make specific use of an individually accessed Key Text for that module as well as lecturer designed course materials (including module guide and web related materials). The use will also be made of a range of accessible (e.g. library held) supplementary texts, articles, reports and other designated sources, including business games, simulations and websites.
