This workshop is designed to provide non-finance executives with a working financial knowledge to enable them to evaluate their business decisions against the financial impact. Participants will develop an understanding of how to use the information in financial statements to evaluate the performance and health of a business, profitability of investments and optimise their business decisions through breakeven analysis.Topics covered include:

  1. Introduction: Accounting concepts, accrual and cash accounting
  2. Finance jargons: Financial jargons in accounting reports, differences between assets, liabilities, equity, revenue and expenses, differences between capitalising and expensing and the impact on the bottom line, depreciation, working capital and working capital cycle, net worth, profit, difference between operating, investing and financing cash flow
  3. Financial statements: Balance sheet, income statement. Cashflow statements. purpose of the statements, detecting liquidity using financial statements
  4. Financial evaluation – Ratio analyse for financial health (ratios and their limitations, common size financial statements, types of ratios and what do they mean – activity, liquidity, solvency and profitability), breakeven analysis (difference between fixed and variable costs, calculate breakeven and margin of safety), contribution, benefit and risk of fixed costs – operating and financial leverage

  • Apply financial language
  • Identify with the various financial statements
  • Evaluate organisation’s financial health
  • Conduct breakeven analysis
